Immoral Consciousness 12:

These 12 consciousness divides into three categories namely;

  • Consciousness Rooted in Attachment or Greed 8
  • Consciousness Rooted in Illwill or Aversion 2
  • Consciousness Rooted in Delusion or Ignorance 2

Consciousness Rooted in Attachment of Greed 8

  1. One consciousness, unprompted, accompanied by pleasure, and connected with wrong view,
  2. One consciousness, prompted, accompanied by pleasure, and connected with wrong view,
  3. One consciousness, unprompted, accompanied by pleasure, and disconnected with wrong view,
  4. One consciousness, prompted, accompanied by pleasure, and disconnected with wrong view,
  5. One consciousness, unprompted, accompanied by indifference, and connected with wrong view,
  6. One consciousness, prompted, accompanied by indifference, and connected with wrong view,
  7. One consciousness, unprompted, accompanied by indifference, and disconnected with wrong view,
  8. One consciousness, prompted, accompanied by indifference, and disconnected with wrong view,

Above eight consciousness could be divided into following:

Promptitude  Feeling  Assosiation
Without With pleasant With wrong view
With With neutral Without wrong view

The meaning of Pāḷi terms:

Somanassa-sahagata = accompanied by pleasure

Upekkhā-sahagata = accompanied by indifference

Diṭṭhigata-sampayutta = connected with wrong view

Diṭṭhigata-vippayutta = disconnected from wrong view

Asaṅkhārika = without promptitude

Sasaṅkhārika = with promptitude

These eight types of consciousness are rooted in Attachment or Greed is commonly generated in any time mindfulness is not situated in sensuous sphere consciousness.

Consciousness Rooted in Illwill or Aversion 2

  1. One consciousness, unprompted, accompanied by displeasure, and connected with illwill.
  2. One consciousness, prompted, accompanied by displeasure, and connected with illwill.

Above two consciousness could be divided into following:

Promptitude Feeling Association
Without With displeasure With ill will
With With displeasure With ill will

Pāḷi terms and their meanings:

Domanassa-sahagata = accompanied by displeasure

Paṭīgha-sampayutta = connected with ill will

These two types of consciousness are connected with Ill will.

Consciousness Rooted in Delusion or Ignorance 2

  1. One consciousness, accompanied by indiffer- ence, and connected with doubts
  2. One consciousness, accompanied by indiffer- ence, and connected with restlessness. These two types of consciousness are rooted in sheer Ignorance.

Above two consciousness could be divided into following:

Feeling  Association
Indifference  Connected with doubt
Indifference Connected with restlessness

Pāḷi terms and their meanings:

Upekkhā-sahagata = accompanied by indifference

Vicikicchā-sampayutta = connected with doubt

Uddhacca-sampayutta = connected with restlessness

Thus end, in all, the twelve types of Immoral Consciousness.

Eight are rooted in Attachment, two in Illwill, and two in Ignorance. Thus there are twelve types of Immoral Consciousness.
